Carbon Monoxide Leaks: When Smart Technology Saves the Day

In the excitement of buying a first home, things like carbon monoxide detectors and planning fire escape routes tend to be a passing thought, but smart homebuyers always know safety comes first. When the Newmans moved into the first new abode that they weren’t renting, it was a unique and thrilling experience. They had been saving up and looking for a four-bedroom colonial near the grandparents and good schools for a long time, and when they found a beautiful blue house with a large backyard, flower beds and an old-fashioned picket fence, they knew it was the one. This was their new home.

Setting up the home

They spent almost eight weeks renovating the kitchen and bathrooms before moving in, refinishing hardwood floors and repairing anything that needed to be updated. As spring rolled around, everything was completed, and it was time to start planning to move in. There was a big family dinner to celebrate their new digs and the beginning of their new lives here, with the grandparents bringing potluck foods and their two children running around playing. Jake Newman’s mother even fastened a large red ribbon on the front entry door for a fun, ceremonial ribbon cutting to mark the event. Jake carried his wife Patty over the first threshold they ever owned, and the family had a great evening celebrating.

In the week that followed, furniture was moved into the new home. Dining rooms, bedrooms and family rooms were set up, as well. They spent days shopping for new area rugs, furniture and bed spreads for the extra rooms they finally had. They also unpacked and put away their children’s clothes and toys. Every long day left them exhausted, and every evening would find them collapsing into bed, satisfied with a full day’s work setting up their new and modern home.

A relaxing evening

When the final touches were completed, alarms all set up, family pictures put on the wall and the last of the books stacked on the shelves, they sat on their sofa and looked around happily. This was their home, they were going to raise their two children here and enjoy holidays, family dinners and celebrations together. They had a quiet family dinner that night, ready to face their first day of simply enjoying their new life and home. No more work to be done! That evening they happily trudged off to bed.

Problems arise

Sometime around the middle of the night, a series of four beeps repeatedly chirping woke up the Newmans and startled the children awake. They found themselves waking drowsily and perspiring, and it took a few moments to shake away the disorientation and realize their new CO2 monitor was alerting them to danger. It was time to act quick! They rushed to grab their children and ran out of the house to get some fresh air and clear out their lungs, and Jake contacted the authorities so they would be able to come in and find out where the carbon monoxide leak was.

Preparedness is important

The Newmans were startled to realize how dangers could be sneak up on them, but they felt good knowing they took steps to prepare themselves and be warned about a potentially life-threatening danger. Vivint’s carbon monoxide detector may not only have saved their lives that night, but with it’s battery life of five years and early carbon monoxide detection, it can continue to give them peace of mind for years to come. It also has a touchscreen that would alert them when the battery needed to be changed, so they would never be without protection.

The Newmans planned ahead to keep themselves safe with smart home technology such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, doorbells enhanced with security-videos and window alarms that would send alerts if any were broken. Because they loved their family, they protected them, and that evening, when the Newmans went to sleep that night, they felt safer than ever because they knew they were doing everything they could to make their home and family safe.
